In the New Yorker article by Reeves
Weedman “ Will Firing Mike Brown Save the Lakers?”, talks about whether or not the Los Angeles Lakers will do well after firing Mike
Brown. After a disastrous 1-4 start of the NBA season, the Lakers pulled the plug
on a coach they only had for just less than two seasons. With the addition of
one of the best centers Dwight Howard and the best point guard Steve Nash along
with the best player in the NBA, Kobe Bryant, the Lakers are projected to win
the NBA Championship. Brown previously worked with the Cavaliers and LeBron
James in 2010 where they came close in winning an NBA championship. He was then
fired after an early exit from the playoffs and the leaving of LeBron as well.
Brown replaced legendary coach Phil Jackson who won ten NBA championships with
the Chicago Bulls and the Lakers. Lakers have the best starting rotation of
Nash, Kobe, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard. They have struggled
to implement the Princeton -style offense, which has won them many
championships with Kobe leading the charge. He states that having a new coach
will not have a major impact even though it is early in the season to tell.
As much as I do not like the
Los Angeles Lakers they filled the void of adding a better replacement for Mike
Brown. A few days after firing Brown, they hired Mike D’Antoni who will start
coaching this week. D’Antoni was a good choice because this will bring back the
relationship of Nash and D’Antoni who were together at the Phoenix Suns for six
years. During their tenure Nash won MVP two consecutive years. His style of
play will fit the Lakers because they will have the best pick and roll with duo
with Nash and Dwight/Gasol. This will help Kobe out in having less pressure to
shoot the ball or be double-teamed. The Lakers have a good chance of taking the
Western Division but have to fix all their problems first before the
post-season starts. As a long time Warriors fan I do not want to see the Lakers
win the NBA Championship. I hope the Miami Heat repeat their championship success
this season.
